New album "1042 Express" by RJ Marshall out now!

We are pleased to announce the release of RJ Marshall's début long player, 1042 Express, in partnership with amuse.io, on May 31, 2024. Available now in all major online music stores, here's the cover art:

Recorded in Phnom Penh from January to March 2020, the album features ten songs written by RJ over a 16-year period, the idea being to do an 'express' snapshot of them at a particular place and point in time. Working in a lo-fi vein with quality equipment and vintage hi-fi gear in Red Jack's mobile studio, we bring you tales of Bokor Mountain, Long Lost Valentines, and leaving cities behind.

A particular debt of thanks is owed to Nathan Fanoni, Damani Kelly, Troy Campbell, Jason Camerado, and Vanntin Hoeurn. For details and back stories to the songs, download the track notes here.

Here's the rear album cover:

You can also listen to and buy the whole album on Bandcamp – including the bonus demo version of Bokor Mountain (not available elsewhere!) – or by clicking below:

Original sessions

"Cambodian singer/guitarist Vanntin Hoeurn, and British singer/guitarist R.J. Marshall, create the uncompromisingly raw musical duo, the Phnom Devils. Combining English and Khmer language, they have re-imagined early-20th Century “Mekong Delta” blues into a visceral musical experience you won’t soon forget."

Blues to the roots

"In a city full of unlikely pairings, one of the more interesting is the creative partnership between Vanntin Hoeurn (generally known as Tin) and RJ Marshall – their latest project is an all-original blues style duo called Phnom Devils."

Simmer in Concert at The Magic Sponge

"On Saturday, 5 January, The Magic Sponge will present for your musical enjoyment our weekly Saturday Music Showcase from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This week we are proud to have as our guest artists Christina from Ethiopia and RJ (Phnom Skor) from England as the duo Simmer. Simmer is a strictly no box, no style roots acoustic piano and guitar duo. Christina performs wonderful Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and Etta James, as well as some really cool early blues ('Lil Green), and RJ Marshall is an independent artist, writer and musician in the style of Marc Bolan, Gram Parsons and John Lennon. He plays a lot of American folk and country as well as his own original material. With 25 years of songwriting experience he tells stories of life and love that shine a light through the darkness. We hope you will look forward to joining us in a great night of fun and music Saturday at The Magic Sponge."
